"As artists, we have a vocabulary of words and themes that are stored in our minds. These words and themes tend to repeat themselves throughout our work because they are within us, they are genuine. A theme that seems to repeat itself in my work is, “with death comes life”. What some might consider a grotesque thought, I find beauty in; When something dies, its body decays and feeds the earth and the other organisms around it. Life becomes a full circle, and nothing becomes worthless."
About Nafeeza
Nafeeza is an artist, born and raised in Queens, New York. She earned her BFA in Fine Arts at Fashion Institute of technology in 2017. Even though her work mostly consists of paintings, she doesn’t consider herself just a painter. She experiments with ceramics, fabrics, textiles, knitting and embroidery, and even printmaking. Nafeeza describes her work as a collection of things that comforts her creative impulses.
"I often hear that artists should have a definitive style, something that makes their work distinctive. I disagree. I have so many ideas running through my head, it’s impossible for me to have one style. Sometimes I want to paint a portrait of someone who I find beautiful, two hours later I want to play with textiles and glue a bunch of tangled yarn onto my stretcher bars. You might say I’m still experimenting with styles and what I find most comforting. But I say, why limit yourself?"
Taking real life experiences, Nafeeza uses her emotions and transforms them into her work. What you see throughout her creations are genuine thoughts, feelings and reactions that occurred within her life. Often times, her ideas manifest themselves throughout her process; What starts as one idea, turns out to be another as she keeps working.
